Today I came across a report on CNN.com that said cancer will be the number one killer in the US in 16 years!!! I have no words! How is this possible??? Medical science has advanced greatly since the 1970s with treating cancer patients.  What does this mean for you, me and our children???

Back in 2006, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer…I ate right (most of the time), exercised (most of the time), didn’t smoke (not at all), and used sunscreen (most of the time). I really wasn’t too concerned about how I contracted the disease but what could I do to get rid of it and LIVE!!! After reading this article, I started to think about if my cancer could have been avoided altogether and the rising cost of health care. I can’t remember every cost of my treatment BUT this is what I had to pay even with insurance…on average $600-$700 a month for medication I had to take at home! Now granted, I had the “Cadillac” of drugs…I wasn’t playing around. LOL. But treatment can be expensive with or without insurance. I'm sure the outcome would have been different if I didn't have insurance, as there was NO WAY I would have been able to afford treatment.

My Dad took me to my first chemotherapy treatment. My doctor had me taking Adriamycin (a drug that was commonly used to treat most forms of cancer). However, Adriamycin
could cause certain severe (rarely fatal) blood disorders that could lead to bone marrow suppression lowering red blood cells/white blood cells /platelets that your body needs to be able ability to fight infection and stop bleeding. In order to combat that, I had to get a shot of Neulasta after each and every Adriamycin treatment. The doctor gave him my prescriptions to get filled. Daddy, said he would pay for whatever the insurance didn't pay. He took the prescriptions to the hospital pharmacy and was mortified when the pharmacist said they needed prior approval and that the Neulasta shot alone cost $3000 without insurance!!! Finally, they approved it but I still paid $100 with my insurance for that one medication. CRAZY!!!

Do the best you can to get coverage!!!
The World Health Organization (WHO) says “cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for 8.2 million deaths in 2012 and is rapidly becoming a global pandemic.” The main types of cancer are:

  • lung (1.59 million deaths)
  • liver (745 000 deaths)
  • stomach (723 000 deaths)
  • colorectal (694 000 deaths)
  • breast (521 000 deaths)
  • oesophageal cancer (400 000 deaths)

While breast, lung and colon cancers are cancers that are commonly diagnosed; lung, liver and stomach cancers are the leading causes of cancer deaths. Why is it spreading like wildfire??? It seems that even with advancements in medical science, we have not gotten rid of bad or nasty habits and have gone as far as to promote and glorify those same bad and nasty habits to undeveloped countries around the world. Ex: the use of tobacco, bowing to the “sun” god, super-sizing meals and the continuance of having multiple sexual partners unprotected. Here are 6 things you can do now to reduce some “man-made” cancers:

1. Stop using tobacco products.
2. Get regular exercise as to stay trim without being underweight.
3. Avoid “unnecessary” sun exposure.
4. Get vaccinated (Human Papilloma Virus - HPV, hepatitis C virus - HCV, and hepatitis B - HBV)
5. Avoid/limit alcohol consumption.
6. Eat more fruits and veggies.
Our children are at risk…what they learn today will stay with them forever! Set the tone NOW…they are our FUTURE!

Remember, it’s always better as you learn preventative measures rather learn from the mistakes of not being proactive.

NOTE: I am not a physician!!! ALWAYS follow the advice of your licensed medical professional. ANY deviation from a prescribed plan of action should ALWAYS be discussed with your licensed medical professional.

What can YOU do to stop the spread of cancer???

Peace and Blessings!
Adrienne

I've had 2 people who were really close to me pass away from cancer. It's scary to think about how it will advance in the future. Taking these steps though will help lower the risk. Thanks for this!

Cancer is definitively all around us. I try to exercise 3 times a week and eat veggies/fruits daily. I agree with you about teaching kids early on about good healthy habits.

Cancer runs in my family as well. But it was my mindset and my belief that got me through! No need to be afraid of the possibility or actuality. Thanks for sharing!

Decided to go natural after successfully finishing chemo for Stage 3 breast cancer. I didn't always do everything right, but did the best I could do. I have a great support system - family, friends and church members who embraced my decision to go natural. So, I decided to pass along the information I've gathered over the years to encourage anyone that they too can do this!

    What is a ManeAngel???

A ManeAngel encourages, educates and helps you embrace who you are while hopefully entertaining you along the way. ManeAngels is for EVERYONE...not just those who have "natural" hair.  We don't exclude anyone.  So, for those who are relaxed, laced, etc. you are welcomed too! Remember, you were made in the image of God...fearfully and wonderfully made!  Embrace it and enjoy the journey!
