If you’re apart of the natural hair community, you’ve probably heard of International Natural Hair Meetup Day. If you haven’t, then International Natural Hair Meetup Day (INHMD), the brainchild of Adeea Rogers, is an annual one-day event that gives naturalistas across the world the opportunity to meet in their own communities while networking, sharing and meeting with other women across the world participating in meetups on the same day. This year, INHMD's title sponsor was Koils by Nature. (psst...I personally love the Shealoe Leave-In Conditioner...unbiased comment :-))
There aren’t many meetups in the Wilmington, NC area that cater to educating and providing valuable and resourceful information. So, Evelyn Bryant who is the creator of The Natural You, decided to bring INHMD to the Port City. She asked for my assistance after attending one of my meetups in Chapel Hill a couple of years ago. AND I was more than willing to help her complete her vision of producing an event where naturalistas, regardless of age, could celebrate their beauty inside and out!

INHMD-Wilmington was held at the Coastline Conference and Convention Center located in downtown Historic Wilmington on the banks of the Cape Fear River. The keynote speakers were a group of young professional women called Naturally Fly Wilmington (NFW) who spoke with the VIP attendees about natural hair in the workplace. The VIPers were encouraged to be confident in themselves and always remain polished, professional and proud as they rock their natural tresses. NFW continued the conversation downstairs to the rest of the meetup demonstrating to us different hairstyles that we can easily manage ourselves...twist outs, Bantu knots, etc.

We had a massage therapist, a nail tech, hair stylists and makeup artists there to pamper our natural selves. I don’t think anyone left there lacking anything. Except me...I should have been in that massage chair!!! :-)
I would like to thank our local vendors:

1. Bria’s Attic (handmade custom jewelry made out of semi-precious stones, porcelain, sterling silver and glass beads)
2. Lavender Studios
3. ManeAngels (yeah, I sold my whipped buttercream and some other goodies! :-))
4. Naturally Fly Wilmington
5. New Hanover County Health Department - Richelle Fonville
6. Noni Bacca Winery (local winery that gave out free samplings)
7. Crosslands Beauty & Barber Supply - Lynette
8. Kellum Law Firm - Hollis Briggs
9. Coastal Care Services
10. Massage Therapist - Mr. Joe
11. Damonni's Hair Salon - Lynne Hines (nail tech)
12. Kia's Creations - Nakia Pittman

Last but certainly not least, I would personally like to thank our supa dupa INHMD-Wilmington swag bag product contributors...let me tell you...those bags were FULL!!!!

1. Koils By Nature
2. Alikay Naturals
3. Karens Body Beautiful
4. Blue Magic
5. Q-Redew
6. Curl Max
7. DooGro
8. Eden Bodyworks
9. Rootspiration
10. As I Am Naturally
11. Shea Moisture
12. Curls Unleashed
13. Jane Carter Solution
And there were tons of discount coupons for for other online vendors! Now that’s a swag bag!!!

This event wasn't just about swag...though it was great...it was about giving back to the community. A portion of the proceeds will go to Lydia's Legacy, an organization targeted towards growing awareness, education and research regarding gynecologic cancers.

In the words of Ice Cube...It was a good day!

Naturalistas in Wilmington, NC….be on the look out for 2015 from ManeAngels and The Natural You!!!! Big plans in the works!!! :-)

Peace and Blessings!
Adrienne

I am not sure exactly what you mean by natural hair, but I have very naturally curly hair & I pay a small fortune to keratin it straight :)

Robin, what I mean by "natural" hair is they way the hair comes out of the scalp without any chemicals to alter the hair pattern. :-) Thanks for sharing!

I've never tried a leave in conditioner, but I did try a Keratase hair mask last night. My poor hair is so fine it gets weighed down easily!

Adrienne
05/24/2014 11:32am

Lindsey, since your hair is fine you might want to try something lighter like a liquid leave-in conditioner. Alikay Naturals Lemongrass Leave-In Conditioner or Jane Carter Solution Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner sounds like it would work for you. Thanks for sharing!

Decided to go natural after successfully finishing chemo for Stage 3 breast cancer. I didn't always do everything right, but did the best I could do. I have a great support system - family, friends and church members who embraced my decision to go natural. So, I decided to pass along the information I've gathered over the years to encourage anyone that they too can do this!

    What is a ManeAngel???

A ManeAngel encourages, educates and helps you embrace who you are while hopefully entertaining you along the way. ManeAngels is for EVERYONE...not just those who have "natural" hair.  We don't exclude anyone.  So, for those who are relaxed, laced, etc. you are welcomed too! Remember, you were made in the image of God...fearfully and wonderfully made!  Embrace it and enjoy the journey!
